                                     Professional Communication

In the workforce grammar skills are becoming a major problem. This is due to the rise of social networks, text messaging, and acronyms. Grammar and writing skills are depleting in the younger generation, and this is not good for business owners. In order to keep a professional environment good communication skills are a necessity. Business owners are fed up with the lack of grammar skills in the work environment. This may cause a significant drop in the unemployment rate in states all over.

In a recent article in Forbes magazine, business writer Susan Adams shows that the vernacular used in a workplace is very important. When a person has bad grammar it shows no organization or disposition. Good grammar shows an individual interprets and listens well to the person they are conversing with. When speaking with proper grammar it shows integrity, and a level of mental acuity. Speaking with correct grammar shows a well put together person and can most likely get the job done. In addition, good grammar indicates a level of respect. (Adams) On the same day ifixit CEO Kyle Weins wrote that he won’t hire people who use poor grammar. A person words show character because everything used today is communicated via internet. Weins states that people who make less mistakes with grammar, also tend to make less mistakes on the job. He also states people who use correct grammar are detail oriented. He believes good grammar shows believability. In a digital age, paying attention to correct grammar speaks for an individual when they are not physically there. In addition, he states people who don’t think grammar is important: may also think the job isn’t important. In conclusion, he states he will pass up on a good worker because of bad grammar skills. (Weins)

Now days with technology being so advanced: grammar and communication skills has depleted. Communication skills are very important as well with grammar. I am perusing a career where communication is very important as a Computer system Analyst. This field requires professional communication skills such as: verbal, body language, effective speaking, listening skills, writing skills, presentation skills, and analytical skills. I will be communicating with different cultures of people on how to operate their business more efficiently. This will require the use of email, power point, or a persuasive essay. In addition, an analyst will need good speaking and listening skills. These skills include comprehension, collaboration, presentation of knowledge and ideas. In my generation scam artist and hacking are at an all-time high. This forces business owners to search for a computer analysts to help with cybersecurity and other technology needs. There is a need for computer analysts all over the world. Indeed, this means communication of solutions to different types of people and organizations. Therefore, communication plays a major key in becoming a Computer System Analysts.

The proper vernacular, and good grammar are important skills to acquire as a Computer System Analysts. Thomas Nelson Community College offers great programs and resources to advance communication skills. In my profession, good grammar skills, are as important as my spinal cord. I lack certain skills such as writing skills, and effective speaking. I would like to communicate using a different selection of words. Mr. Richard Dollieslager English class offers different resources to help advance your skills. There are online resources such as: the Guide to Grammar and Writing, W.M Norton on-line handbook, and Norton Field Guide to writing. These resources gives directions on comma use, complete sentences, and fused sentences. These are areas that I am weak in, and using these resources can increase my writing skills tremendously. Effective speaking or public speaking is something I feel I need to work on. TNCC offers public speaking classes that I will be taking in the fall semester. This class will not only help me with speaking in front of a crowd; but also with presentations for companies or IT departments. This includes important skills such as non-verbal communication, listening skills, and clarification. In addition, there are online websites that help with communication skills such as: udemy blog, mind tools, or free training resources. These skills have to be practiced for perfection.

In conclusion, Weins and Adams both give great illustrations on why grammar is important. I believe good communication skills will take a person far in life. These skills are needed not just in school: but at work, grocery store, handling discrepancies with bills, and among other various obligations. These are skills that should be updated periodically such as, a system update on a cell phone. Reading books are a good source to keep grammar skills sharp. This will enable the brain to constantly work and not stay idle. Communication skills are needed every day. Therefore, it is very vital to study these skills and practice them as much as possible.
